Orris root powder is the dried and ground root of the iris plant. Pleasing on its own, orris root smells similar to violets. It is used primarily as a fixative in perfumes to enhance other aromas. It has stabilizing properties that help preserve scents in things like cosmetics and potpourri. For April, our Bulk Herb & Spice team has come up with some great recipes incorporating orris root powder.
Dry Shampoo Recipe
1 tbsp Orris Root Powder
1 tbsp Kaolin Clay Powder
1 tbsp Cacao Powder (use more or less to match hair color)
You can also add a few drops of your favorite essential oil for fragrance, but make sure it is one you can use topically.
Mix all ingredients well and store in an airtight container. Pour small amount into hands, work into scalp, brush out.
Spring Breeze Potpourri
Bring the fresh scent of the Spring indoors with this easy DIY potpourri.
Bulk Herb Ingredients: (4-5 Tbsp or 1 part each)
• Rose
• Cardamom Pods
• Lemongrass
• Calendula
• Star Anise
• Lavender
• Hibiscus
Fixative:
2 Tbsp – Orris Root Powder
General Rule of Thumb: 1 Tbsp Orris Root/ per 1 cup Potpourri
Essential Oil Blend:
2 drops Nutmeg
10 drops Lavender
12 drops Grapefruit
8 drops Douglas Fir
Directions:
Mix dry herb together in large bowl. In a separate bowl, place 2 Tbsp of Orris Root Powder and mix in essential oils. Pour fixative mixture over herbs and fold together gently.
Place in an airtight container for storage. Bag up in small gift packs for friends and family or place in decorative bowls around the house. Keep out of direct sunlight for best results.
