What Are Juniper Berries? Well, they’re not actual berries. They’re a type of cone similar to a pinecone, but spongy and round. Their shape and purplish color make them look more like berries, though. These popular berries are commonly found in cooking and can be used in drink recipes. Like most foods, juniper berries come with a variety of health benefits. People have used it as an anti-inflammatory and a diuretic. Try them in this Herb-Infused Cocktail Base Recipe!

Herb-Infused Cocktail Base Recipe

Makes enough for about four 8 oz. drinks.

Ingredients

  • 2 organic cinnamon sticks
  • 1 Tbsp. organic star anise pods
  • 1 Tbsp. organic whole cloves
  • 1 Tbsp. organic juniper berries
  • 1 Tbsp. organic coriander seeds
  • 1 Tbsp. organic whole allspice
  • 1 organic bay leaf
  • 32 oz. organic apple cider
  • 1 small organic orange
  • 1 tsp. organic lemon juice

Directions: Combine herbs and apple cider in a pot over medium-low heat. Squeeze in juice from orange and 1 tsp. lemon juice Bring to a simmer. Simmer for 15-20 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside to cool enough to handle. Strain herb-infused cider into a jar and store in refrigerator for up to 5 days. Cool completely before using in gin fizz.
