4 Wines You Need To Know

Wines

Kim here! I want to introduce you to some lesser-known wines of the world. Many of us know Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Shiraz.

Here at Mama Jeans, we have so many different kinds of wine that you just don’t see at most grocery stores.

Let’s start out with one of my absolute favorite types of wine!

Cabernet Franc

Cab Franc is a black skinned grape that originated in the Southwest of France, but now grown in many regions of the world.

This wine, although related to Cabernet Sauvignon, is lighter in body and has less acid. Cab Franc has beautiful floral notes and bright red fruit. A beautiful garnet color that is pleasing to the eye.

This wine can also be slightly chilled in warmer weather and still taste as it should.

One of my favorites come from the Samur region in France. So delicious.

Enjoy this wine with dishes like pepper steak, roasted veggies and mushroom ravioli.

This next one is also one of my favorites. (Which ones aren’t, you ask?)

Pinotage

Pinotage is grown mainly in South Africa. These wines can be very structured with a heavy body and strong tannins. (tannins are what makes the wine dry)

You can experience dark fruit, pepper, dark chocolate notes and occasionally smokey notes. Definitely a winter warmer kind of wine.

This wine pairs well with Spaghetti and meatballs, BBQ and anything robust.

This next wine is, you guessed it, another favorite of mine!

Primativo

Primativo is Italy’s version of Zinfandel. We’re not talking about grandmas White Zinfandel either.

Primativo is again, a very heavy bodied wine with juicy dark fruit notes like, plum, fig, raisin, and blueberries. This is the kind of wine you can pair food with or just sit by the fire and enjoy.

If you decide to eat, pair with foods like pizza, burgers, or anything hearty.

This next one will taste familiar, but the name isn’t as familiar.

Claret

Claret is a British term for Bordeaux wine.

Claret is typically a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petite Verdot and Cab franc.

Having smooth tannins and lush flavors of wild berries, plum and anis, this a very easy wine to pair food with. Enjoy with red roasted meats, mushroom dishes or anything earthy.

Now that you know a little more about these fine wines, don’t hesitate to ask me about them when you’re shopping. I would love to tell you more!

Cheers and as always, thank you for shopping local!
